Bible Study Post #12 (Exodus) – The Meaning of the Word “Holy”

God makes a lot of threats about what you can and can’t do around these holy altars and oils.  That you can only use them to please God, but that using them for yourself means death.  Notice the words “whatsoever toucheth the alter (or them) shall be holy.”  Since you can buy forgiveness anyway, this shouldn’t come to any great surprise.

What does it even mean to be holy in the first place? Pleasant in the eyes of God?

Exodus 29:37

  • Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy

Exodus 30:29

  • And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.

Exodus 30:32

  • Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you
